AFter Abortion Care

For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.
Jeremiah 29:11

There is Hope

Abortion is a very complicated choice, and the reasons for choosing are as varied as the people who have experienced it. Abortion is often thought of as a simple procedure or medication relieving the anxiety of an unintended pregnancy with no physical or emotional side effects. However, for some, the sense of relief felt after the abortion may quickly dissipate, leaving one confused and conflicted, alone and isolated. If there is a lack of support, the secrets surrounding the abortion and the complication of identifying loss may contribute to the inability to process one’s feelings after the abortion.

An unintended pregnancy may be perceived negatively by the persons affected, such as loss of independence, love, dreams, respect, and relationships. When ending in abortion, new losses emerge. It is necessary to grieve the losses one feels, particularly the loss of a relationship with the child. If our grief is complicated with unhealthy coping, the unresolved emotions damage ourselves, our relationships, and the future.

Abortion after care provides a safe, confidential and supportive environment to begin the healing process. Meeting with a caring, compassionate advocate who will listen and help sort through feelings can bring relief to emotions difficult to understand. Another option is to attend a support group where other men or women are going through similar struggles with loss. No one has to go through this alone. There is support for everyone.

When deciding to take the courageous first step in seeking relief from pain and loss, please consider the resources provided. Silence can cover pain but healing comes when a safe person is there to listen as one shares in the healing process. There is hope. No one is alone. Everyone matters.
